A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Northvolt and both the North German state of Schleswig-Holstein and region of Heide for the establishment of a battery gigafactory. Northvolt’s third such factory – Northvolt Drei – will have an annual production capacity of 60 GWh, sufficient for some one million electric vehicles.

With its clean energy surplus, proximity to important key costumers on continental Europe, and the fact that it is expected to become an important clean technology cluster, Schleswig-Holstein is an ideal location for this factory. Northvolt Drei is expected to provide approximately 3,000 jobs.

With this new factory, Northvolt further strengthens its goal of delivering the world’s greenest lithium-ion battery, and its long-term transformative impact on the battery industry. Sustainability will permeate not only the energy grid and properties of the batteries produced by Northvolt Drei, but its entire production process. It will source significant shares of its raw material requirements from recycled battery metals and target an on-site battery recycling plant to efficiently reuse byproducts.
